Surah Yusuf

وَقَالَ لِفِتْيَـٰنِهِ ٱجْعَلُوا۟ بِضَـٰعَتَهُمْ فِى رِحَالِهِمْ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَعْرِفُونَهَآ إِذَا ٱنقَلَبُوٓا۟ إِلَىٰٓ أَهْلِهِمْ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُونَ

Wa qāla lifityānihij‘alū biḍā‘atahum fī riḥālihim la‘allahum ya‘rifūnahā iżanqalabū ilā ahlihim la‘allahum yarji‘ūn(a).

And [Joseph] said to his servants, "Put their merchandise into their saddlebags so they might recognize it when they have gone back to their people that perhaps they will [again] return."

373) According to most commentators (mufassir), the goods used by the brothers of Prophet Joseph (peace be upon him) to barter for food supplies were skins (leather) or sandals. 374) This action was taken as a strategy to show them generosity and kindness, ensuring that they would be willing to return to Egypt in the future and bring Benjamin with them.
