Surah Al-Isra
وَإِذْ قُلْنَا لَكَ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ أَحَاطَ بِٱلنَّاسِ ۚ وَمَا جَعَلْنَا ٱلرُّءْيَا ٱلَّتِىٓ أَرَيْنَـٰكَ إِلَّا فِتْنَةً لِّلنَّاسِ وَٱلشَّجَرَةَ ٱلْمَلْعُونَةَ فِى ٱلْقُرْءَانِ ۚ وَنُخَوِّفُهُمْ فَمَا يَزِيدُهُمْ إِلَّا طُغْيَـٰنًا كَبِيرًا
Wa iż qulnā laka inna rabbaka aḥāṭa bin-nās(i), wa mā ja‘alnar-ru'yal-latī araināka illā fitnatal lin-nāsi wasy-syajaratal mal‘ūnata fil-qur'ān(i), wa nukhawwifuhum, famā yazīduhum illā ṭugyānan kabīrā(n).
And [remember, O Muhammad], when We told you, "Indeed, your Lord has encompassed the people." And We did not make the sight which We showed you except as a trial for the people, as was the accursed tree [mentioned] in the Qur'an. And We threaten them, but it increases them not except in great transgression.

432) According to some commentators, what is meant by ru’yā here is related to the event of Isra and Mi'raj, so its meaning is 'the Prophet's vision during Isra and Mi'raj'. Meanwhile, according to other commentators, this ru’yā is related to the Battle of Badar. Thus, its meaning is 'the dream experienced by the Messenger of Allah before the event of the Battle of Badar'. 433) The cursed tree is the Zaqqum tree (see surah aṣ-Ṣāffāt/37: 62 and ad-Dukhān/44: 43).
