Surah Ta-Ha
قَالُوا۟ مَآ أَخْلَفْنَا مَوْعِدَكَ بِمَلْكِنَا وَلَـٰكِنَّا حُمِّلْنَآ أَوْزَارًا مِّن زِينَةِ ٱلْقَوْمِ فَقَذَفْنَـٰهَا فَكَذَٰلِكَ أَلْقَى ٱلسَّامِرِىُّ
Qālū mā akhlafnā mau‘idaka bimalkinā wa lākinnā ḥummilnā auzāram min zīnatil-qaumi fa qażafnāhā fa każālika alqas-sāmiriyy(u).
They said, "We did not break our promise to you by our will, but we were made to carry burdens from the ornaments of the people [of Pharaoh], so we threw them [into the fire], and thus did the Samiri throw."

476) The heavy burden mentioned in this verse can mean heavy in a physical sense, and it can also mean the burden of sin for not returning the jewelry they borrowed from the Egyptian people. 477) They were told to bring the gold jewelry belonging to the Egyptians, and then Samiri asked them to throw the jewelry into a fire he had lit in a pit to be made into a statue shaped like a calf. Then, they threw it in along with Samiri.
