Surah Ali 'Imran

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تَأْكُلُوا۟ ٱلرِّبَوٰٓا۟ أَضْعَـٰفًا مُّضَـٰعَفَةً ۖ وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ

Yā ayyuhal-lażīna āmanū lā ta'kulur-ribā aḍ‘āfam muḍā‘afah(tan), wattaqullāha la‘allakum tufliḥūn(a).

O you who have believed, do not consume usury, doubled and multiplied, but fear Allah that you may be successful.

118) Riba (usury) in this verse refers to a debt which, when it cannot be repaid at the time of maturity, the debtor is granted an extension of time in exchange for an increase in the amount to be repaid. According to the scholars, this Riba an-Nasiah is prohibited (haram), even if the amount of increase is not multiplied.
