Surah Al-A'raf
وَبَيْنَهُمَا حِجَابٌ ۚ وَعَلَى ٱلْأَعْرَافِ رِجَالٌ يَعْرِفُونَ كُلًّۢا بِسِيمَىٰهُمْ ۚ وَنَادَوْا۟ أَصْحَـٰبَ ٱلْجَنَّةِ أَن سَلَـٰمٌ عَلَيْكُمْ ۚ لَمْ يَدْخُلُوهَا وَهُمْ يَطْمَعُونَ
Wa bainahumā ḥijāb(un), wa ‘alal-a‘rāfi rijāluy ya‘rifūna kullam bisīmāhum, wa nādau aṣḥābal-jannati an salāmun ‘alaikum, lam yadkhulūhā wa hum yaṭma‘ūn(a).
And between them will be a partition, and on [its] elevations are men who recognize all by their mark. And they call out to the companions of Paradise, "Peace be upon you." They have not [yet] entered it, but they long intensely.

273) The word "a‘rāf" is the plural form of "‘urf", which means 'something high' or 'something honorable'. The barrier between Paradise and Hell is called "a‘rāf" because of its elevated position.
