Surah At-Tawbah
Wa mimman ḥaulakum minal-a‘rābi munāfiqūn(a),wa min ahlil-madīnati maradū ‘alan nifāq(i), lā ta‘lamuhum, naḥnu na‘lamuhum, sanu‘ażżibuhum marrataini ṡumma yuraddūna ilā ‘ażābin ‘aẓīm(in).
And among those around you of the bedouins are hypocrites, and [also] from the people of Madinah. They have become accustomed to hypocrisy. You, [O Muhammad], do not know them, [but] We know them. We will punish them twice [in this world]; then they will be returned to a great punishment.
📝 Footnotes
331) The first time, they were defeated by Prophet Muhammad SAW and the Muslims; and the second time, their hypocrisy was exposed by Allah SWT. It can also be interpreted that the first punishment is the punishment of this world and the second is the punishment of the grave, as this verse concludes with an emphasis on the existence of the punishment in the hereafter (ṡumma yuraddūna ilā ‘ażābin ‘aẓīm).
