4) In the Qur'an, there are 29 surahs that open with the Arabic letters known as al-huruf al-muqatta'ah (disconnected letters read by their individual names), such as Alif Lam Mim, Alif Lam Ra, and so on. Only Allah SWT knows the absolute, true meaning of these combinations of letters. However, looking at their function, some scholars are of the opinion that these letters serve to draw attention or to demonstrate the miraculous nature (i'jaz) of the Qur'an.
