Surah Al-Baqarah
ٱلشَّهْرُ ٱلْحَرَامُ بِٱلشَّهْرِ ٱلْحَرَامِ وَٱلْحُرُمَـٰتُ قِصَاصٌ ۚ فَمَنِ ٱعْتَدَىٰ عَلَيْكُمْ فَٱعْتَدُوا۟ عَلَيْهِ بِمِثْلِ مَا ٱعْتَدَىٰ عَلَيْكُمْ ۚ وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ مَعَ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ
Asy-syahrul-ḥarāmu bisy-syahril-ḥarāmi wal-ḥurumātu qiṣāṣ(un), famani‘tadā ‘alaikum fa‘tadū ‘alaihi bimiṡli ma‘tadā ‘alaikum, wattaqullāha wa‘lamū annallāha ma‘al-muttaqīn(a).
[Fighting in] the sacred month is for [aggression committed in] the sacred month, and for [all] violations is legal retribution. So whoever has assaulted you, then assault him in the same way that he has assaulted you. And fear Allah and know that Allah is with those who fear Him.

54) What is meant is that if the Muslims are attacked during a sacred month, they are permitted to retaliate during that same month. 55) Something that is sacred/respected can refer to the sacred months, namely Dhu al-Qi'dah, Dhu al-Hijjah, Muharram, and Rajab; the sacred sanctuary (Makkah); and the state of being in Ihram.
