Surah Al-Baqarah
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تَقُولُوا۟ رَٰعِنَا وَقُولُوا۟ ٱنظُرْنَا وَٱسْمَعُوا۟ ۗ وَلِلْكَـٰفِرِينَ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ
Yā ayyuhal-lażīna āmanū lā taqūlū rā‘inā wa qūlunẓurnā wasma‘ū wa lil-kāfirīna ‘ażābun alīm(un).
O you who have believed, say not [to Allah 's Messenger], "Ra'ina" but say, "Unthurna" and listen. And for the disbelievers is a painful punishment.
📝 Footnotes
33) Rā‘inā means 'attend to us' (listen to us). However, the Jews twisted its pronunciation to sound like ru‘ūnah, which means 'utterly foolish', as a mockery of the Messenger of Allah. Therefore, Allah SWT commanded the companions to use the word unẓurnā instead of rā‘inā since both carry the same initial meaning.
